Saltern

Saltern table in production season. Bottom: cord of salt, the orange colour of the water is due to algae.

Berre-l'Etang, Bouches-du-Rhône, France, July.

"A saltern is an entirely man-made environment, which produces both economic (salt) and ecological wealth: each grade of salinity corresponds to a particular group of fauna and flora, of which pink flamingos are symbolic. We fear a certain fundamentalism in environmental management, which could lead to abandoning these areas to nature. This would be a major economic, cultural and ecological loss."
